Lamonte’s Story

Lamonte Lundy didn’t know much about Christianity until he came to Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission.  He was born to a teenage mother, and his aunt used to take him to the mosque on weekends.

Selling drugs, smoking marijuana and drinking excessively became part of Lamonte’s lifestyle as a rapper and hip hop artist.  It’s a lifestyle that he doesn’t want back, even though friends were impressed by all of the people he knew and his musical success.

When Lamonte first arrived at Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, he had lost all of his belongings and identification.  Simply wanting a new ID and a place to crash for a few days, Lamonte did not expect what happened next.

“It was like a smack in the face when I entered the mission,” said Lamonte.  “I used to sell drugs, and now I was on the other side of the fence.  I saw what had happened to the people I had sold drugs to”.   The sight of homeless and destitute drug addicts was overwhelming.  Countless street deals flashed through his mind.

Lamonte also never expected to commit his life to Christ while he was at the mission.

Before lunch and supper, chaplains or local pastors shared a message with guests.  Lamonte watched the mission chaplains living out their faith and thought to himself, “I want what they have”.   During this time, he started reading the Bible, and the Holy Spirit convicted his heart.

Lamonte decided to stay and complete the year-long program at Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission.

He learned biblical truths and started applying God’s Word to his life.  He was eventually awarded a full scholarship to attend the People For People Institute, where he earned an Associate’s Degree from Eastern University in December 2009.

Lamonte is still living at the mission while he applies for jobs.  His long-term goal is to use the gift of music to reach inner city kids and turn urban music into something positive.  He also wants to be a better father to his daughters.

“My daughters used to know that dad was a rapper,” said Lamonte.  “But now I want them know me as a man of God”.
