Emergency Services
Have you ever wondered where your next meal was going to come from? Or where you were going to sleep tonight? These are urgent needs that must be met before deeper issues in a person's life can be helped.
Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission provides many services that meet the basic needs of the Philadelphia area's homeless population:
Meals
As our name suggests, Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission began by serving breakfast on Sunday mornings. Since our beginning in 1878, the mission has expanded to serve three meals every day of the year. In 2007 more than 110,000 meals were provided for hungry men and women at our Center City location.
- Breakfast - 7 am
- Lunch - Noon
- Snack - 2:15 pm (served on most days)
- Dinner - 6 pm
Emergency Shelter
The overnight shelter for transients provides accomodations for up to 175 men. During extreme temperatures, overflow sleeping mats are used so that no one will be turned away. Men are able to stay with us for thirty (30) days free of charge. If men who are working with our staff need more time, they are able to stay an additional fourteen (14) days at the rate of $2.50 per night (many times this fee is waived).
Clothing Exchange
Clothes and toiletries are provided free of charge to those in need. These items are either donated directly to the mission, or through our thrift store, the Beehive.
Chapel
Staff chaplains and volunteers from local churches conduct two services a day, prior to the noon and evening meal.
Day Services
Chaplains are available during the day to provide assistance and referrals for people with various needs:
- housing
- employment opportunities
- health service
- legal aid
- vocational training
- connections to other agencies that provide these services
- locations and telephone numbers to other shelters
Breaking the cycle of homelessness
Men who visit the mission for emergency services are given the opportunity to join the Overcomer's Program, our year-long recovery program. Those men who desire to change their lives are equipped with the necessary skills for returning to society as productive citizens.
